1.  What is financial aid?  Financial aid provides monetary assistance to help cover a student's educational expenses.  Financial aid may include scholarships, grants, loans and sometimes part-time employment.

2.  How do I apply for financial aid?  You should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) annually in order to be considered for financial assistance.  If you've not already completed the FAFSA, please visit http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ to do so..

3.  When should I apply for financial aid?  The sooner, the better!  Financial aid awards are made throughout the year; however, to ensure that your financial aid award is made by the beginning of the term, all required forms should be RECEIVED in our office by the priority date.  

April 1  -  Summer Priority Date for all students
June 1  -  Fall Semester Priority Date for Returning students 
July 1  -  Fall Semester Priority Date for New students
Nov. 15  -  Spring Semester Priority Date for all students

4.  Can I receive financial aid if I am unable to meet the priority date?  Yes, however your financial aid file MUST be complete 30 days before the last day of the term or last day of your enrollment, whichever occurs first.

5.  Will I qualify for financial aid?  Your financial aid eligibility will be reviewed once your file is complete.  Even if you are not eligible for scholarships, most students, regardless of need, are eligible to receive student loans if they enroll in at least six hours of coursework.  Remember that you must be accepted into a degree or teacher certificate program at Mercer before financial aid can be awarded to you.

7 Can I receive the HOPE Scholarship?  You may be eligible if you have a 3.0 cumulative HOPE GPA after attempting 30, 60 or 90 semester hours AND after each Spring semester.  Designated High School HOPE Scholars, who graduated after 1995, may also qualify.  A HOPE Scholarship Eligibility Review will be performed for all students once they have been fully admitted to the University.  To learn more about the HOPE Scholarship at a private university, go to www.gacollege411.org.

8.  What is the Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant?   Full‑time students who are Georgia residents may qualify for the Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant (GTEG).  Application information will be sent to you at the beginning of your first term of enrollment as a full-time student.  You must be enrolled and attending classes in at least 12 hours of undergraduate coursework for 14 days after the drop‑add period of Session II in order to receive the GTEG.  The total credit hours for which a student can receive the grant is limited to 127 semester hours.

9.  How do I apply for a student loan?  You must complete a FAFSA and a Mercer Application for Financial Aid.  Most students are given an opportunity to accept or decline a student loan when they receive their Award Notification Letter. Remember that you must be enrolled at least half‑time (6 hours) in order to receive a student loan.  Additional information regarding student loans will be provided to you along with your Award Letter or you may go to www.ed.gov/directloan for more information.

10.  What if I decide that I do not need a loan?  You are under no obligation to accept a student loan.  You may reject a student loan that has been offered to you by writing “reject” on your Award Notification Letter or by rejecting the loan on Bearport.

11.  What is BearPort? 

BearPort is a website where fully admitted Mercer Students can access information regarding their student records, registration and financial aid.

12.  My financial aid file was selected for verification.  What does that mean?  Verification is the process in which the information submitted on your FAFSA is checked for accuracy.  If your file was selected for verification by the federal processor, it is imperative that you submit all requested information as soon as possible.  Financial Aid Awards will not be made until the verification process is complete.

13.  Can I transfer my financial aid from another university to Mercer?  Financial aid does not transfer from one school to another.  If you have already completed a FAFSA, you should add Mercer’s school code (001580) to your Student Aid Report (SAR) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov or you should call the Federal Processor at 1-800-433-3243 and request that Mercer’s school code be added to your SAR.  You must also complete the Mercer University Application for Financial Aid.

14.  How will I be notified regarding my financial aid awards? The Financial Planning Office will send you an Award Notification Letter which outlines the financial aid that has been awarded to you.  It is critical that you formally accept your financial aid awards before the last day of the term or your last day of enrollment, whichever occurs first.  Alternatively, you may accept your awards by logging into your personal Bearport account at http://bearport.mercer.edu.

15.  When will I receive my financial aid awards?  Your financial aid will generally be credited to your student account at the beginning of each semester.  Financial Aid awards are first applied to the tuition and fees that have been charged to you by the Bursar’s Office.  If your financial aid awards total more than your tuition and fees, the Bursar’s Office will refund the excess to you.  Refunds are not available until after the term's drop‑add period.

16.  What if I do not enroll for the number of courses or sessions indicated on my Mercer Financial Aid Award Letter? Contact the Financial Planning Office immediately so that your financial aid can be adjusted.  Failure to contact our office will delay the receipt of your financial aid awards.

17.  What should I do if I'm not on my instructor's class roster?  You must be enrolled and attending class at the end of the drop-add period in order to receive financial aid for the class.  If you are enrolled in a class your name will be on the instructor's class roster.  Contact the Registrar's Office immediately if you are not included on the roster.  Only the Registrar's Office can add you to a class ‑ not the instructor or center coordinator.

18.  Will dropping or withdrawing from a class affect my financial aid?  You may possibly lose all or some of your financial aid for the semester.  Contact your financial aid advisor prior to dropping or withdrawing from a class.  It is also imperative that you follow the appropriate drop/withdrawal procedures outlined in the Mercer University Catalog.

19.  What is Satisfactory Academic Progress?  All students are required to maintain satisfactory academic progress standards in order to maintain Federal and State financial aid eligibility.  A student must successfully complete 67% of all courses attempted at Mercer, maintain the minimum GPA required for continued enrollment and complete their educational program within 150% of the published length of the program.  See the “General Financial Aid Information” section of this website for additional information.

20 Is there financial aid available for the summer term?  Yes; however, your Summer financial aid may differ significantly from your academic year award because Summer financial aid is based on remaining eligibility from the previous academic year.  Students who have exhausted their Pell and loan eligibility during the academic year may not receive any financial aid during the Summer.

21. Can you explain the new federal income tax credits available for higher education expenses?  The Federal HOPE Scholarship, a tax credit worth up to $1500 per student, is available to first and second year students enrolled at least half‑time.  The Lifetime Learning Credit is a tax credit equal to 20% of a family's tuition expenses, up to $5000, for subsequent post-secondary education.  Please consult your tax advisor or IRS Publication 970 for additional details.
